It's almost as if the first half of the track (which was previously available) sounds flawless, then it seems to cross-fade into an almost mono sounding track. I've listened to it many times and this always ends up being my impression. The rest of the CD (Disc 1) sounds brilliant. Are my ears deceiving me???

No. Apparently not all the session masters for Star Trek: TMP could be found. So some of the additional cues were taken from inferior sources (and "fixed" with noise reduction).
